Game of Thrones Finale: Jon Reunited With Ghost, and That’s All That Matters

Among the momentous things that happened in Sunday’s Game of Thrones finale, titled “The Iron Throne,” the most important — and this is not up for debate — was Jon Snow (Kit Harington) reuniting with Ghost, who is still a very good boy.

Now, I know this might be a controversial opinion because Jon ditched Ghost a few episodes ago without so much as a goodbye nose boop — that episode’s director, David Nutter, had a lousy excuse for why that was, by the way — but I was personally very happy to see man reunited with his beloved CGI-enhanced direwolf. It’s true that Jon might not have been the best pet owner — and if someone in my life had abandoned a pet as cruelly as Jon had, I probably wouldn’t let them near another animal ever again — but look at how happy this dumb dork is to see Ghost again.

And look at how happy Ghost is to see his dumb best friend!

None of us are worthy of dogs, and direwolves look like large dogs, so none of us are worthy of direwolves either. But I’ve kind of forgiven Jon for his earlier actions because what else does Jon have in his life right now if he doesn’t have Ghost’s unconditional love? He killed Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), who was apparently the love of his life even though she was also his aunt, in order to protect the realms of men from further destruction. And then he was banished to the Night’s Watch for killing Daenerys, effectively taking his story full circle. Jon does not have a lot by the end of the show, is what I am saying. And while I don’t particularly think I will be losing sleep over how his story ended, I think it’s probably right for Jon to have Ghost by his side as he travels north of the Wall with Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) and the rest of the Free Folk, if for nothing else then so he can hold onto something warm while he cries himself to sleep at night. Jon seems like a big crier.

Of course, that being said, if Game of Thrones had ended with a scene of Tormund and Ghost playing catch in the snow while Jon looked on sadly from afar, I probably would not have been all that mad, either. Just so long as Ghost is happy, you know? Just so long as Ghost got what he wanted. Because in the end, the only thing that matters is that the show does right by Ghost, the true star of Game of Thrones.
