In the bajillion years I’ve been writing bike features for Hot Bike, I’ve come across some pretty funny names given to custom bikes by their owners, but this old FXR’s “Jailbait” moniker is now one of my favorites. Unlike the common usage of that term, this one gets its tag from the urge to pin the throttle and win yourself a speeding ticket. The personal ride of Daniel Dolan (who owns Freakshow Tattoo in Colorado), it’s the prize hog of a passel of Harley-Davidsons that he hoards away on a regular basis. Daniel tells us: “I own two tattoo shops in Fort Collins and have a Harley-Davidson hoarding problem. At any given point I have 15 to 20 Harleys. I buy, sell, and trade bikes.” However, his real passion lies with H-D’s best-handling Big Twin of all time, the FXR. At any given time he has four to nine of them in his possession.

What makes Jailbait Daniel’s dream FXR is its blend of styles. “Harleys are an expression of their owners, and I tend to be a little larger than life and like to think Jailbait is the same,” Daniel says. “The prevailing theme was a club-style FXR whose primary focus was performance and reliability. I wanted to hang with any bagger on the highway and crush them in the corners.”

It also had to draw stares. The last response you want from onlookers for a bike is, “Meh.” As Daniel puts it, “It’s my opinion that if a bike, car, piece of art isn’t polarizing, it isn’t good. It should cause a reaction in the viewer. So far Jailbait gets a lot of thumbs-up and a ton of smiles at shows. Either way, we didn’t build it for your approval! I’m happy if you like it, but could care less if you don’t. In this day of big-wheel baggers and cholo Softails, this bike bridges the gap. The comfort and convenience of a midsize bagger with the performance of a mild sportbike. It is my dream bike and thank you for letting me share it with you!”
