When it comes to TV spin-offs, AMC’s Better Call Saul easily ranks among the best of all time.

The critically acclaimed series serves as a prequel to the network’s iconic drama Breaking Bad and centers on one of its most colorful characters, Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), long before he became the amoral, homonymic pseudonym-boasting attorney who did all that dirty work for Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).

With returning characters like Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), Mike Ehrmentrout (Jonathan Banks), and Hector Salamanca (Mark Margolis), Better Call Saul show gives Breaking Bad fans some new perspective on a few old favorites, revealing how they came to be who we knew them to be on the show. However, Better Call Saul really soars with its engrossing cast of new characters, including Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn), Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian), Chuck McGill (Michael McKean), and Nacho Varga (Michael Mando), all of whom are organic to Saul’s story but were not introduced in Breaking Bad. Even better, the show presents a fresh vision of Saul Goodman himself, beginning when he was still just Jimmy McGill, a former con artist trying to forge a legitimate life for himself as a lawyer.

For anyone who’s just caught up on Breaking Bad and wants to give the sister series a whirl — or perhaps revisit the series to fill the void during its hiatus (no new episodes are expected until 2020) — there’s good and bad news. The first three seasons of Better Call Saul are currently available on Netflix, but to watch the recently aired Season 4, fans will have to pony up some money to stream it at Amazon Prime Video at this time.

Better Call Saul will return to AMC for Season 5, likely in 2020, with at least one more season expected to follow. The series is the first spin-off property to Breaking Bad, but it won’t be the last; creator Vince Gilligan is also developing a Breaking Bad sequel movie, which will reportedly be available on Netflix before airing AMC and may or may not give fans the closure they’ve been hoping for with Jesse Pinkman’s story.
