Jane the Virgin’s Jennie Snyder Urman on Michael Getting His Memories Back

No one could have prepared us for the rush of emotions we would feel at the end of Jane the Virgin‘s latest episode, “Chapter Eighty-Four,” which saw Michael (Brett Dier) finally get his memories back… right after signing and delivering divorce papers to Jane (Gina Rodriguez).

As Jason/Michael walked away from Jane’s front door to leave Miami for Montana, his fishing rod hit the roof of the Villanuevas’ comforting front porch, causing small flakes of plaster to rain down on him. An obvious callback to Jane and Michael’s first kiss, the moment is what finally caused all of Michael’s memories to come rushing back. Honestly, if you didn’t cry when he remembered Jane and their love story, you need to have your eyeballs checked. Even members of Team Rafael (Justin Baldoni) were crying.

But what does Michael getting his memories back mean for Jane now? And what does it mean for her relationship with Rafael moving forward? There is, predictably, good news and bad news.

Let’s start with the good news; fans won’t have to wait too long for Jane to find out that Michael is Michael once more. “I don’t hold secrets too long on this show,” showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman told TV Guide. “I think it’s exciting to have secrets come out and then see how people respond and that always creates new drama, ’cause I don’t like stalling too much on this particular show. So that’s going to be the event of Episode 4.”

The bad news, of course, is that although Michael now has his memories back, he is also a different person. He still has all of the memories of his time in Montana, and those four years have changed him, just as the four years Jane spent grieving Michael, moving on, and falling in love with Rafael have changed who she is too. Making things even more difficult is the fact that Michael sees that Jane has moved on and is happy, and that is going to affect how he proceeds.

“Michael doesn’t want to blow up [Jane’s] life,” Urman said of how Michael will react to his memories and therefore his feelings for Jane resurfacing. “That instinct is about the most Michael thing he could do.”

Jane will presumably have to make a decision between Michael and Rafael eventually though, and it sounds like it might be sooner rather than later. “There’s an ending planned for Jane, and it’s not a surprise in the finale,” Urman teased of what fans can expect from the rest of the show’s final season. “But what that is, who she ends up with, if she ends up with someone, you’ll have to wait and see.”
