Jeff Bridges is coming soon to a TV near you for the first time ever as a series regular. FX has given a straight-to-series order for The Old Man, starring Bridges as — you guessed it — the titular old man.

According to FX, the series, based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Thomas Perry, “centers on Dan Chase, who absconded from the CIA decades ago and has been living off the grid since. When an assassin arrives and tries to take Chase out, the old operative learns that to ensure his future he now must reconcile his past.”

The series will be written and executive produced by Black Sails‘ Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine. Steinberg said in a statement, “Jeff Bridges is one of the most important actors of his generation…To call this a project a dream opportunity for us is almost certainly a gross understatement.”

No other cast members have been announced for the show yet, and production is expected to begin this fall.

While Bridges has appeared in numerous television episodes over the years (and has hosted Saturday Night Live twice) this marks his first leading role on TV. The Old Man is also one of the first FX series announced under Disney’s new leadership of the network.
