Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba play two tough-as-nails detectives on L.A.’s Finest, but the two women hold significant power behind the scenes too. They serve as executive producers and work hard to create a pioneering environment that empowers women, people of color, and even working moms. But they took one of the toughest hits imaginable in February, when a member of their team, executive producer/co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier, had his leg was amputated after a stunt car on set struck a shipping container and rolled onto Sonnier’s leg as he was watching the scene on a monitor in the video village. His leg was pinned by the container, and his leg was amputated below the knee due to the injury.

Alba and Union spoke about the accident at the 59th Monte Carlo Television Festival on Sunday, telling Variety that as painful as the accident was for the team, they’re staying strong and moving forward.

“I don’t know if there is a word that’s big enough to describe how the whole production felt, how everyone associated with the show felt,” Union said. “I don’t know if saying it was ‘heartbreaking’ or ‘devastating’ is enough.” Struggling to keep her emotions in check, Union said that Sonnier was a model of strength and they followed his lead. “I think Brandon [Sonnier] led us. Um… He was back coaching on the sidelines of his kids’ games within a week and a half… he was like ‘It’s my new normal; get on board, guys.'”

Alba added, “He is so resilient and inspiring. But when you go through something that is like that you see the type of family and community that you surround yourself with, and he and all of us really came together as a family in a way that you just never even realize until something like that happens.”

L.A.’s Finest airs on Spectrum’s On Demand platform. The show was recently renewed for a second season.
