When I tell you “John Malkovich has joined the cast of The New Pope, the follow-up to HBO’s limited series The Young Pope,” your response should be, “It’s crazy he wasn’t in the first season.” Malkovich’s whole vibe is “crazy Pope,” you know? He wasn’t in The Young Pope, but that oversight is being rectified for The New Pope, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Details of Malkovich’s character, as well as any details about the plot of The New Pope, are being kept under wraps. But it will surely be something even weirder than you can imagine. Did you watch The Young Pope? It was nuts.

The New Pope is being written by Paolo Sorrentino, Umberto Contarello and Stefano Bises, who worked together on The Young Pope. The New Pope is the sequel(?) to that limited series, in which Jude Law will reprise his role as Pope Pius XIII (born Lenny Belardo), the Catholic Church’s first American Pope, an extreme conservative who clashes with entrenched Vatican power structures.

The Young Pope was an international co-production that aired in Italy in 2016 before it premiered on HBO in America early last year. The New Pope has no premiere date yet.

Malkovich is a two-time Oscar nominee who’s known for movies like Being John Malkovich. He was most recently seen as a Russian oligarch on Billions.
