Julia Garner and Anna Chlumsky have joined the cast of Inventing Anna, a retelling of Jessica Pressler’s New York Magazine article “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People,” Deadline reports. The Netflix series is being helmed by Shonda Rhimes and will be the showrunner’s first project under her new deal with the streaming platform.
Garner, who won an Emmy this year for her work on Ozark, will play Anna Delvey, an enigmatic young woman claiming to be a German heiress who mingled with the heavy hitters of New York City’s social scene just long enough to con them out of their money. Chlumsky will play an intrepid reporter named Vivian, who investigates Delvey’s crimes but finds herself growing increasingly attached to the con woman.

Inventing Anna, a 10-episode limited drama series, attempts to answer the question of whether Delvey is New York’s biggest con woman or the new personification of the American Dream.
Rhimes has also recruited Scandal‘s Katie Lowes for the series, along with Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black) and Alexis Floyd (The Bold Type).
Inventing Anna does not yet have a premiere date.
