The world doesn’t need yet another reboot, but that’s just what the world shall get when the new Magnum P.I. debuts on CBS September 24 with Scandal‘s Jay Hernandez taking over as an unmustachioed version of Thomas Magnum, the character made famous by Tom Selleck‘s upper lip. The conscious decision to go without a mustache how you know this ain’t your daddy’s Magnum, P.I.

The show’s latest round of self-aware casting brings us Ken Jeong and Carl Weathers as one of Magnum’s fellow P.I.s and poker buddies and one of his clients, respectively, according to Entertainment Weekly. Jeong is a comedy star best known for Community and The Hangover, while Rocky‘s Weathers is great at sending up his tough-guy image, as seen on Arrested Development. Weathers will play a Marine-turned-tuna fisherman who enlists Magnum’s help in finding a valuable catch that’s been stolen.

Original recipe Magnum P.I. was a ratings powerhouse for its first five seasons that launched Tom Selleck’s facial hair into iconic pop-culture status and snagged an Emmy for John Hillerman, who originated the role of Jonathan Higgins on the series. It was also a total sausagefest, with no women in the main cast. In an effort to update the show for audiences who want to relive television from the Reagan era but also aren’t completely traumatized by the idea of non-white dudes being TV action stars, the new class of Magnum P.I. includes casting a Latino actor as the series’ titular character and switching Jonathan Higgins out for Juliet Higgins, portrayed by Perdita Weeks of Penny Dreadful and The Tudors fame.

Magnum P.I. premieres Monday, Sept. 24 at 9/8c on CBS.
