Three people were stabbed in an apparent attack on New Year’s Eve at a British train station, the police said.
In a statement, the British Transport Police said officers received a call at 8:52 p.m. about “a man wielding a knife” at the Manchester Victoria train station, in Northern England.
They said they had detained a suspect.
One man and one woman, both in their 50s, were taken to the hospital with knife injuries, and an officer was being treated for a stab wound to the shoulder, the authorities said.
The man suffered injuries to his abdomen, and the women to her face and abdomen. The police said the injuries were “serious but not thought to be life-threatening.”
Manchester Metrolink, which runs train service in and around the city, said that it had shut down tram service because of the incident.
Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts of the Greater Manchester Police said in a statement that counterterrorism officers were leading the investigation to “make sure we have all the expertise available to us,” although “we don’t yet know the full circumstances and are keeping an open mind.”
He added, “Tonight’s events will have understandably worried people, but I need to stress that the incident is not ongoing, a man is in custody and there is currently no intelligence to suggest that there is any wider threat at this time.”
