‘At key points in U.S. history, one of the two parties has served as a bulwark against those who threaten our Constitution. Two years ago at the Democratic Convention, I warned of those threats. Today, I have re-registered as a Democrat — I had been a member for most of my life — because we need Democrats to provide the checks and balance our nation so badly needs.’

And with that, Michael Bloomberg is a Democrat. Again.

Bloomberg, 76, the Wall Street giant, was a lifelong Democrat who flipped allegiances to run and serve as New York mayor as a Republican. He later left the GOP.

Bloomberg shared his re-registration in an Instagram post Wednesday.

Speculation has picked up that Bloomberg is again seriously considering a 2020 presidential run. He had weighed runs as an independent, in 2008, 2012 and 2016, but ultimately decided against it for fear of splitting the Democratic vote.

Certainly the former mayor has funneled part of his considerable fortune toward more Democratic-leaning initiatives, pledging tens of millions of dollars through his philanthropy arm to address climate change, public health and education.

And with $80 million in hand, he’s also been helping Democratic candidates in their pursuit to flip the Republican-held majority in the House this November.
