Wednesday said revenue ticked up in the second quarter, but it fell short of Wall Street targets for the period.

The New York-based trading and exchange company said revenue rose about 1% from the year earlier to $623 million.

Profit increased to $174 million, or $1.04 a share, from $162 million, or 97 cents a share, in the second quarter last year.

After adjustments, the company reported a profit of $1.22 a share.

Analysts expected a second-quarter adjusted profit of $1.20 a share on $631 million in revenue, according to FactSet.

Operating expenses of $367 million in the second quarter were 6% higher than a year ago due to increased spending related in part to strategic initiatives.
