Nashville Will Become a Broadway Musical Next

Rayna Jaymes is heading to Broadway.

The scripted TV series may have come to an end, but Nashville is set to live on as a theatrical musical adaptation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Nashville, which ran on ABC for its first four seasons before being canceled and then picked up for two more seasons at CMT, originally starred Connie Britton as Rayna Jaymes, an established country superstar, opposite Hayden Panettiere as up-and-coming sensation Juliette Barnes. Jaymes, who fancied herself the “Queen of Country Music,” took issue with Barnes’ more pop-country persuasion, but the two wound up forging a partnership when they joined forces and created some hit records together.

Nashville‘s series finale aired in late 2018, and although Britton had left the show ahead of its sixth season, she returned to the role one last time for a dreamy flashback that kept the spirit of the show alive in its final run.

The Nashville musical will mark Lionsgate’s first production on Broadway and will feature a slate of all-new country music.

“Nashville, with its complex, relatable characters and sweeping emotional gestures, has all of the narrative elements that I look for in great theatrical source material,” said Tony Award-winning producer Scott Delman in a statement. “From that rich DNA, we will be building an original story with entirely original music, written by major Nashville and Broadway songwriters. We are particularly excited to deliver Broadway’s first score of true contemporary country music — a genre that has exploded with mainstream audiences in recent years. Lionsgate has a treasure-trove of sterling IP, and I’m honored to be a part of this new phase of their live entertainment division.”

All six seasons of Nashville are available for streaming at Hulu.
