Netflix just landed a big one in the hunt for the next Game of Thrones (though this one will be more family-friendly). The streaming service will develop TV series and movies based on The Chronicles of Narnia fantasy novel series by C.S. Lewis, the company announced Wednesday.
Mark Gordon of Entertainment One (eOne), Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber will be the executive producers for shows and producers for movies.
Lewis’ series of novels, which began in 1950 with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and ended in 1956 with The Last Battle, tells the story of the magical land of Narnia. In each novel, children from our world get magically transported to Narnia, where they help the lion Aslan protect Narnia from the forces of evil. The books have sold more than 100 million copies and been translated in more than 47 languages worldwide.
Notably, this is the first time the rights to all seven books have been held by a single company, so this will be the most complete adaptation yet. The series has been adapted numerous times over the years in various forms; most recently in a film series that started in 2005 with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The latest installment of that iteration, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, was released in 2010. A fourth film in the series, The Silver Chair, has been in development since then, though that movie is presumably getting folded into this Netflix deal and may or may not happen in its originally planned form.
