One of the pilots in contention for the 2018-2019 broadcast season that was thought to be a sure thing is now actually a sure thing — just not on a broadcast network or even necessarily part of the 2018-2019 season. Mixtape, originally developed by Fox this past pilot cycle, was passed on to Netflix, which just gave the series a 10-episode order.
Mixtape is a musical romantic drama that connects love stories from different groups of people in the Los Angeles area, which sounds like catnip for a broadcast network looking for the next This Is Us emotional wringing with some Glee music numbers thrown in. The series comes from Quantico creator Joshua Safran, and stars La La Land‘s Callie Hernandez, Revenge‘s Madeleine Stowe, Step Up‘s Jenna Dewan and House of Card‘s Campbell Scott.
Even though we all thought the show would be airing on Fox this fall, the network passed on it, possibly in part due to the direction of “new Fox,” which is targeting more mainstream, safer fare like procedurals and multi-camera comedies. The move to Netflix should help the show creatively, as the streamer gives more freedom to showrunners, omits structural requirements for commercials and uses shorter seasons for tighter plots.
Mixtape is the latest show to hop from one network to another. The Bad Boys spin-off L.A.’s Finest was passed over by NBC but is now at Charter, Brooklyn Nine-Nine went from Fox to NBC, The Expanse was saved by Amazon after getting canceled by Syfy and Fox’s Lucifer was also nabbed by Netflix.
