Now that the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards have come and gone, it’s time for the Academy Awards to cap off awards season with one final verdict on the year’s best and brightest cinematic accomplishments.
black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross and The Big Sick actor Kumail Nanjiani will deliver this year’s full list of Oscar nominees on Tuesday morning, teeing up what is sure to be a competitive race for film’s biggest prizes when the Academy Awards air on ABC next month (albeit without a host).
It’s expected that Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born, Ryan Coogler’s superhero epic Black Panther, Peter Farrelly’s race drama Green Book and Alfonso Cuarón’s Netflix release Roma will compete for top honors in the major categories. Cooper and Cuarón each could score multiple nominations individual nods as well. For Cooper, he’s a top contender in best actor, best director, best adapted screenplay and best picture (he produced A Star Is Born); for Cuarón, the Mexican-born filmmaker is a potential nominee in best director, best original screenplay, best cinematography and best picture (he produced Roma). The record for most individual nominations in a single year belongs to Walt Disney, who won four Academy Awards on six nominations at the 1954 ceremony.
