The powerful tsunami that struck Indonesia’s two most-populous islands this weekend was the second deadly tsunami to strike the country in 2018, a year that has brought more than its fair share of disasters to the nation.

Coming without warning, the wave that rose from the Sunda Strait to hit Sumatra and Java was thought to have been caused by an undersea landslide that was set off by volcanic activity.

On Sunday, residents and rescuers were left to sift through the hundreds of damaged buildings in search of survivors and victims. Over 220 people were killed and more than 800 injured by the deadly wave, which reached nearly 10 feet high as it washed over the coast.

Here is a selection of photos of the aftermath.
