Quantico returned and answered one major question: Why aren’t Ryan (Jake McLaughlin) and Alex (Priyanka Chopra) still together?
The Season 3 premiere picked up three years after the Season 2 finale with Alex living a chill life in Italy, sans Ryan or any of the members of their former crew. It didn’t take long for Alex’s former beau to find her though, and it was Shelby (Johanna Braddy) who brought them back together. She was kidnapped by an ominous new threat and Ryan needed Alex’s help to get her back. He was desperate because he and Shelby got married.
Yes, that’s right. In the three years since we saw Alex and Ryan fly off into the sunset together, she ditched him and he ended up trading vows with Shelby. Now they’re all going to be working together on an FBI sanctioned black-ops team run by Owen (Blair Underwood) with Harry (Russell Tovey) and Jocelyn Turner (Marlee Matlin).
TV Guide spoke to Chopra about that premiere bombshell revelation and where Alex and Ryan (and the team) go from here.

We find out that Ryan and Shelby got married. Alex says she’s OK with that but how does she really feel?
Priyanka Chopra: How whack is that, right?! When I read that, I was like, “Oh my god.” …Of course [Alex] is conflicted, like anyone would be. Alex also knows that it’s her fault. She disappeared. She left him when he left everything for her. She left him when he was expecting to have his life with this girl. She understands that it’s a little bit her fault. She loves Shelby. She wants to be really happy for her, but at the same time [Alex] needs to understand how to deal with this situation in the best way possible. It’s not like you can do anything about it now.
At the end of this episode, Alex has to give up her own family that she had found in Italy to join the team. Does that make it even harder to see Ryan and Shelby together?
Chopra: I don’ think Alex is hung up on the whole Ryan and Shelby thing. You know how you see something like that and it kind of turns you off a little bit? She now understands that she has moved on and it would be very hypocritical of her to hold Ryan or Shelby accountable when she herself has moved on from it. She’s just trying to make sense of it. You see that pop up through the season where she’s alone and now Alex, the kind of girl who has always had attention and always had drama with Ryan, suddenly has to choose herself. Her whole struggle through this season is going to be, “Who is she?” What is she running from? What actually does she stand for?

Things are always complicated between Alex and Ryan. Can they still be good working partners or will Alex grow closer to someone else on the team?
Chopra: You always see sort of a complication between Ryan and Alex because of their personal lives, but boy do they work well together. They have always been partners. You’ll see them being partnered. The beauty of this season is that unlike the first two seasons where we were sort of pitted against each other and we couldn’t trust each other, this is the black-ops group that Alex brings together of the people she can trust, of the people that she knows will have her back. Ryan is one of them.
How long does it take this group of people to really gel together and really work as a team considering they haven’t worked together like this before?
Chopra: It takes a few episodes because whenever you come into a new job, you don’t immediately find the fit. It’s really interesting to find the dynamics of the new people coming in vis-a-vis the old G’s, as we like to call ourselves…We are the only ones who have survived from the pilot until now. Everyone else has been killed off or something has happened. It’s really cool to see our characters, see the relationships that they form. It takes a few episodes for that to happen for sure.

Because this is a black-ops team, will we see them get any cases that are in the moral grey area?Chopra: They don’t just have to question themselves, but they have to disobey the law. They have to put their lives on the line because sometimes they have to bend the rules because they are a black-ops team that has been sanctioned by the FBI but at the same time, they do something outside of the rules that the country won’t stand for. The stakes are super high but all of the people on this team know [what they’re doing]. They are extremely patriotic and they love their team. That’s why they decide to come together for the greater good.
Can you tease what’s going to take this team to Ireland and across the globe?
Chopra: What you’ll see by the end of the season is something becomes really personal with these agents. Someone takes them on on a really personal level. The pursuit of that character takes us to Ireland.
