5 Things to Watch Today – July 11, 2017

If there was ever any doubt that the Jace (Dominic Sherwood) we know and love is gone for good, tonight’s episode of Shadowhunters dispelled it.

After revealing his true identity as The Owl to Clary (Katherine McNamara), Jace took to the roof to escape. Unfortunately, Clary wasn’t about to let him get away, and she gave chase. The fight that followed was one of the most brutal we’ve seen on Shadowhunters to date, and not just because it was painful for Clace fans to watch their favorite couple beating the crap out of each other. It was also devastating because it ended with Jace tossing Clary off the roof, nearly killing her with the fall.

Thanks to some quick rescuing from Simon (Alberto Rosende), Clary was able to recover from her injuries quickly, but that was only the start of Jace’s downward spiral this week.

The next stop on his murder tour was Alicante, where he tried to dig up Valentine’s (Alan Van Sprang) body to help resurrect Jonathan (Will Tudor). He ended up slaughtering his own grandmother in the process, which feels like rock bottom as far as this identity crisis is concerned. Even worse, he left Clary to take the fall for his crimes. If Jace can cut a bloody path through everyone who has ever mattered to him, he may be beyond help.

Shadowhunters: Umm… Is Alec Going to Cheat on Magnus?!

Alec (Matthew Daddario) and Izzy (Emeraude Toubia) managed to imprison him and get him to Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) in the hopes of finding a cure, but there’s a bigger question here besides whether Magnus can restore Jace to the person he used to be. The real question we have to ask ourselves is what happens if Magnus does?

One of the pillars of Jace’s personality is his loyalty to The Clave and the people he loves, and that was mercilessly stripped from him. When and if he gains control of himself again, he’ll have to grapple with the reality that he treated his friends horribly, attempted to murder the love of his life, and gutted his own grandmother. Those are tough sins to deal with, and Jace’s remorse for his crimes would no doubt be a huge weight on his shoulders. If he does make it back to us, his head is going to be in a seriously messed up place.

Then again, when the alternative is staying a bloodthirsty minion of the Queen of Hell, it’s kind of a no-win situation.

Secrets from Set: This week, Dominic Sherwood and Katherine McNamara took us through that intense rooftop fight scene between Jace and Clary. The power of green screens and safety wires allowed for Sherwood to dangle his scene partner over that ledge and then drop her onto the car below, but the real hilarity came in when they were staging the aftermath of Clary’s fall.

“One of the morbidly humorous things that we had to do was they had the car on set, and they said, ‘Hey, Kat, here’s some old pictures of people that have fallen from great heights and died. Can you, uh, contort yourself in any of these ways so we can, you know, dent the car properly?” Kat McNamara reveals.

Shadowhunters airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Freeform.
