5 Things to Watch Today – July 11, 2017

The wait for the new season of The 100 has felt endless, but at long last we finally have the first look at Season 5.

The CW released the long-teased trailer for the season, which will pick up after the shocking six-year time jump that found Clarke (Eliza Taylor) raising a young Nightblood Madi (now played by Lola Flanery), Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) ruling over the survivors in the bunker and Bellamy (Bob Morley), Raven (Lindsey Morgan), Murphy (Richard Harmon), Monty (Christopher Larkin), Harper (Chelsey Reist), Emori (Luisa D’Oliveira) and Echo (Tasya Teles) still on the rocket in space despite it being safe for them to return for a full year.

Oh, and we almost forgot to mention the mysterious prison ship bearing a whole new roster of villains to face off with Clarke and our heroes!

The previous season finale left so many questions in the air, and fortunately this trailer begins to provide some answers. In it, we quickly learn that the prisoners definitely do not come in peace. When they land and learn there is only one livable valley on the ground that was seemingly unaffected by Praimfaya, their leader Charmaine Diyoza (Ivana Milicevic) decides to wage war on Clarke and anyone else who may lay claim to the land.

Everything to Know About The 100 Season 5

Clarke, willing to do anything to ensure the best life for Madi, isn’t about to roll over — and neither is Octavia. Although the season will begin with Octavia still struggling to rule in the bunker, when she surfaces and learns of the green valley, she is ready to lead her people into battle to fight for that land. But our heroes will have their work cut out for them. It appears as though there’s a second ship in space carrying an entire army of people from before the first nuclear apocalypse who will soon be joining Charmaine’s team on Earth to fight for the land.

If the thought of another brutal war between competing factions feels familiar, that’s because it’s supposed to. It seems a main theme of the fifth season will be questioning whether history is bound to repeat itself and how, if they so choose, they might break the cycle. “Clarke didn’t die for us to live just so that we could go back to the ground and make the same mistakes,” Bellamy declares at one point in the trailer.

“If a war is the only way to have the last survivable land on Earth, then maybe we don’t deserve it,” Monty muses later.

Hopefully this trailer is enough to keep you somewhat satiated until The 100 returns Tuesday, April 24 at 9/8c on The CW. Or maybe we can look into going into a cryogenic sleep like the prisoners on the Eligius until closer to when The 100 returns.
