This week, there has been a lot of news on the TV front. From the many, many, many surprising cast departures to a couple of hotly anticipated show premieres to the arrival of winter Game of Thrones‘ full-on pop culture takeover, there’s been a lot to keep up with. Here, we’ve narrowed down a few of the moments that stood out to us most in the small screen scene
Funniest meltdown: The return of Veep proved that Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) still has staying power even in this off-the-walls political environment. The funniest subplot of the show had to be the revelation that Jonah (Timothy C. Simons) married his ex-step-sister because not only did it give life to his oddball confusion of step- and half-siblings — “whichever one when I bone her she doesn’t give birth to a pile of legs,” he says of their relationship — but it also results in an on-camera meltdown. When a TV interviewer brings in his former stepfather, who declares the he misses his mother, Jonah screeches, “Don’t touch her. Those hands are for making me Hot Pockets and nothing else” before chanting “I’m gonna be president.” Not surprisingly, his poll numbers went up after the incident.
Wackiest villain: Hulu‘s latest Into the Dark installment, titled I’m Just F*cking With You, features Hayes MacArthur as an murderous practical jokester who torments a pair of adult siblings at a secluded motel until they break. Not only does his entire presence render the thing ridiculous, but he looks even more accidentally hilarious whenever he wields his cartoonish little pistol.
GIF of the week: April Fools’ Day is a complete headache for all of us in the entertainment journalism realm, but Maisie Williams‘ Game of Thrones spoiler gag was aces. She pretended to drop a major spoiler about the well-guarded events of Season 8 — that Arya Stark would die in the second episode, so mark that one off your predictions list now — and followed it up with a look of sheer surprise and fear that just about sold it. (H/T to John Stamos to fully committing to his faux feud with Netflix, too.)
Most romantic discussion about poop: The Season 2 premiere of Tracy Morgan‘s comedy The Last O.G. focuses on the tough times had by single mom Shay-Shay (Tiffany Haddish) while Tray is imprisoned, as Tray seeks to learn more about his kids’ childhood. That includes digging up Shay’s video of the twins’ birth, as well as graphic detail of something else that came out of Shay during the ordeal. But Tray wants to see it all and never once gets grossed out by anything because he loves everything about Shay and his kids. It’s a sweet moment, albeit probably a bit stinky, too.
Swooniest speech: Watching Gretchen (Aya Cash) and Jimmy’s (Chris Geere) relationship unfold on You’re the Worst has been an absolute roller coaster right from the start, but this week’s series finale put a very nice pin in things when Jimmy delivered a mini-monologue about their love that felt both real and demonstrative of the whole show. “I don’t want to be with you because I made a promise to be with you. I want to be with you because I want to be with you. So every day, we wake up, look at each other and say today, again, I choose you,” he said. That’s about as happy an ending as we could get expect to get from these two, and we’ll take it.
Best reconciliation: We’d been pretty mad at Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown) for standing in the way of Beth’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) teaching ambitions. So, while the season finale of This Is Us certainly had some somber moments, the news that these two have been able to hash out their differences in a way that will make both of their lives easier is a huge relief. Those two have to work out. They have to.
The perfectly imperfect proposal: At the risk of overdoing it with all the couple-y feels, we have to also give a nod to Schitt’s Creek for making our hearts soar. Again. After Patrick (Noah Reid) takes David (Dan Levy) on a hiking trip, the expectable ensues. David puts up a stink about how much effort it all takes, and Patrick gets frustrated to the point of wanting to call it all off. After Patrick injures himself a bit, though, David changes his tune and insists they finish the date as planned, at which point Patrick opens up a box with four rings that are so very David and proposes marriage. That sound you heard late last night was all of the show’s American audiences jumping for joy in unison at this development.
Binge of the week: There are a lot of options on the table for what to binge this weekend. You can become one with nature by way of Netflix’s new documentary series Our Planet, or catch up on CBS All Access‘ first two episodes of The Twilight Zone (and then see if you, too, spotted these Easter eggs). Annnd, of course, Netflix is dropping Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 2 this weekend, so don’t miss out on that magic, either!
