5 Things to Watch Today – July 11, 2017

The Fosters premiered as groundbreaking TV in 2013. It starred Teri Polo and Sherri Saum as an interracial lesbian couple leading a blended family of adopted teens. Over the course of five seasons, the series has continued to push television forward, exposing issues in a broken foster system, tackling tough topics like sexuality, gender identity, gun control and immigration and starting conversations otherwise considered taboo in Middle America.

On Tuesday, March 13 the show celebrates the end of its fifth and final season with two-hour 100th episode. The show will return for a three-episode, three-night event this summer, but the landmark episode will denote the closing of a big chapter for the Freeform series before the summer finale paves the way for a Fosters spin-off centered on Maia Mitchell‘s and Cierra Ramirez‘s characters, Callie and Mariana.

What Do We Want from The Fosters Spin-Off?

TV Guide was lucky enough to be on set for the filming of the 100th episode and caught up with the cast and creators to talk about what it means to have made it this far and what they think the lasting impact of The Fosters will be in years to come. While the stars were able to highlight a lot of great, personal storylines their characters endured, the running theme throughout the discussion is that The Fosters is a show about a family that has invited you into their home week after week for five years. Whether that family looks like yours or not, they hope you felt welcome and seen.

The Fosters Season 5 finale airs Tuesday, March 13 at 8/7c.
