The Fosters has been a staple of family, heartwarming television on Freeform for five seasons but will tearfully come to a close next week.
The show wrapped up its major storylines at the end of Season 5 but set up a special three-night, three-hour finale event to allow fans a chance to say a final goodbye to the show before moving on to The Fosters spin-off, Good Trouble, centered around Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) and Callie’s (Maia Mitchell) adult adventures in Los Angeles.
We Finally Know the Name of The Fosters Spin-Off
Before that can begin though, the Adams-Foster family will travel to Turks & Caicos for Brandon’s (David Lambert) wedding as their final family adventure. TV Guide got the chance to sit down with Ramirez to talk about the finale event and get a little taste of what good trouble awaits in the spin-off.
Cierra Ramirez, The Fosters
How is this Mariana going to be different from the one that we met at the end of Season 5?Cierra Ramirez: This Mariana has officially finished college. You see her in this three-part series finale. She’s at that part in her life where she’s figuring out her next steps and as you can tell, Brandon her sibling is getting married so that’s pretty exciting.
How does she feel about Brandon getting married? We know Callie is not stoked.
Ramirez: It’s all about Brandon and you know that Mariana is all about an event. She’s all over it. She’s so excited for this wedding. I think you’re in store for something really great.
Mariana and Mat got back together at the end of the season. Are things going well there or will there be trouble in paradise?
Ramirez: I mean, you’ll have to see. Four years is a long time. They reconnected as you can see when they went to college, but you’ll have to watch out.

The Season 5 finale could have worked as a series finale. Why did you want to have this extra chance to say goodbye to the show?
Ramirez: It was amazing. I think the fans are going to get some closure as well. We actually had the opportunity to film on location at the Turks & Caicos Beaches resort. In a lot of ways it felt like a family vacation. It was so much fun to be on this island together with the cast and crew, like a last hurrah. It was so much fun. It was really a bittersweet moment. When we wrapped we had a 10-minute long group hug.
What was it like filming that final scene knowing that it was going to be your last time shooting The Fosters?
Ramirez: I want to cry right now thinking about it. I can’t say which scene it was, but it really was a bittersweet moment. To end with that scene was really, really sweet.
The Fosters Mega Buzz: Will Jesus and Emma Stay Together?
Fortunately, we do not have to say goodbye to Mariana yet. You’re going to the spin-off! How is the tone of Good Trouble going to be different from The Fosters?
Ramirez: I don’t know that the tone will be that different. We have the same amazing writers. The beauty of it is that it is set in present day. They have touched everything [on The Fosters] in the social climate but now they will get to be even more relevant…[Mariana and Callie] are in their 20s, kind of experiencing life and all the trials and tribulations of that — thinking you have it all together and you really don’t. I’m excited to see these girls take on Los Angeles together.
The Fosters finale event begins Monday, June 4 at 8/7c on Freeform.
