Now that Halloween is out of the way, and we’ve had plenty of time to savor all those creative celebrity costumes, it’s time for the real holiday season to begin, which means Friendsgiving is nigh and all those cheesetastic holiday movies are just around the bend. For now, here’s a look at the TV moments that got our attention the most this week.
Best argument for a second season: Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark? miniseries concluded over the weekend, putting an end to the saga of Mr. Tophat and the Carnival of Doom. But the Midnight Society still has some stories to tell, judging by that final scene that teased a return to “The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner.” As much as we dug seeing them become part of the action in this reboot, we sure hope they get the chance to take us on another spooky adventure, especially if it’s going to be about one of the original show’s most iconic villains.
Timeliest disaster: The penultimate episode of The Affair was intense, and not just because of the painful fallout from the allegations against Noah Solloway (Dominic West) and what it meant for his relationships with Helen (Maura Tierney) and Whitney (Julia Goldani Telles). The episode was also backdropped by a major California blaze, and the scary scenery matched reality all too well as the state fights numerous growing wildfires in real life. The show has always been a bit grim, but that shot of the burned roadway was just too much.

Worst burn: There’s a lot to talk about again this week with HBO’s new Watchmen series. What’s really going on with the old man? Was that hideous discovery in the closet authentic? What was the deal with the levitating toy? Perhaps the most befuddling moment of the episode came near the end, though, when Adrian Veidt (Jeremy Irons) finally got to see his servants perform his little play, and for the big finish, he lit one of them on fire. For a second, it seemed like the guy’s agonized wails might’ve just been for show, especially when the same guy descended onto the stage from another spot, but then we found out that he has an untold amount of clones running around the property, all ready and willing to be burned to a crisp for this maniac’s entertainment. Two episodes in, and this show is already bananas in the best way.
GIF of the week: As The Voice moved into the knockout rounds this week, all four coaches’ contestants got to work with Taylor Swift, who served as the “mega-mentor” for the season, and, yeah, absolutely everyone was starstruck. For her part, Swift seemed to be enjoying the attention — what artist wouldn’t be flattered by such unbridled adulation, including a fan who literally sported a tattoo of her lyrics? And whilst sitting in the show’s signature red chairs, Swift treated us all to this celebratory boogie session that deserves to be memed.

Most surprising cameo: American Horror Story: 1984 knocked our socks off this week with not one but two returning cast members joining the fold. We already knew that Dylan McDermott would appear this week — he played the mustachioed serial killer Bruce — but we were stunned to witness the return of Lily Rabe as the Lady in White, aka the completely batty mother of Mr. Jingles (John Carroll Lynch). Rabe’s ability to go full-throttle weird has always been an asset to the anthology, and this time was no exception; she even did the unthinkable and proved that Fiona Goode isn’t the worst mom in the AHS universe after all.
Best turnaround: And the Nationals win it! After an eventful World Series that made headlines for a lot of different reasons, Washington managed to pull it off in Game 7, coming from behind to beat the Astros, despite them putting some of the best pitchers in the league on the mound. It’s the Nationals’ first World Series win as a franchise.
The most overdue unmasking: It was a whirlwind week for Game of Thrones fans. The show’s creators backed out of their big Star Wars project, the first prequel was canned just hours before the second one got a straight-to-series order, and we finally got some resolution about who was responsible for the infamous coffee cup heard ’round the world. According to Emilia Clarke, it was none other than Conleth Hill, who fessed up to leaving his refuse lying on set … and letting her take the blame for it. No wonder Daenerys did Varys so dirty in the end.
