Is Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) about to be killed off of The Walking Dead? A sneak peek of his final episode of the zombie thriller suggests that the injured sheriff is about to meet his maker, but not before taking a trip through his past.

In the preview for “What Comes After,” Grimes is seen bleeding out on his horse, wheezing and barely able to stay on. The video then cuts to flashes of familiar places like the bridge he’s been trying to rebuild, the hospital where we first met him and his police car with his partner Shane (Jon Bernthal). Whether or not these are the fever dreams of a dying man remains to be seen. What’s clear, though, is that Grimes’ exit after eight-and-half-ish seasons will likely be an emotional affair filled with familiar callbacks and plenty of tearful goodbyes, even if some of them aren’t real.

Lincoln previously said in his farewell address at San Diego Comic-Con that his “relationship with Mr. Grimes is far from over,” hinting that maybe Grimes doesn’t die after all. However, Norman Reedus also told TV Guide during a set visit that the last scene Lincoln filmed featured Grimes laying in a bed in a moment where he was forced to smile even though it “wasn’t a smiley moment,” suggesting that perhaps Rick will meet his end in bittersweet fashion.

Find out how The Walking Dead bids farewell to Rick Grimes when his final episode airs Sunday, Nov. 4 at 9/8c on AMC.
