The Walking Dead’s Greg Nicotero Is Rebooting Horror Anthology Creepshow for Shudder – Today’s News: Our Take

Looks like I’m going to have to sign up for Shudder.

The AMC-owned horror-focused streaming service announced Wednesday that it’s rebooting the beloved horror anthology Creepshow as a series overseen by The Walking Dead‘s makeup effects wizard Greg Nicotero.

Nicotero — who has directed some of The Walking Dead‘s finest hours — will executive-produce and creative-direct the anthology series, as well as direct its first episode. Each episode will be helmed by a different director. Nicotero’s KNB EFX Group will handle the creature and make-up effects. The series is slated to premiere in 2019.

The first Creepshow movie came out in 1982 and was a collaboration between two horror icons. Author Stephen King wrote the screenplay and acted in one of the shorts, “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill,” and Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero — a man without whom Nicotero’s career would not exist — was behind the camera. It contained five short stories linked together through a comic-book frame device. It spawned two sequels and a comic series. Nicotero worked on Creepshow 2 early in his career as a makeup effects artist.

The new Creepshow will adapt the spirit of the original into a TV format, keeping the movie’s tagline “The Most Fun You’ll Ever Have Being Scared.”

The horror anthology subgenre is making a comeback, with The Shape of Water‘s Guillermo del Toro producing one for Netflix and Get Out‘s Jordan Peele producing a Twilight Zone reboot for CBS All Access.

Shudder has a large library of horror films (including exclusives like Rob Zombie‘s 31 and the infamous Kuso) and is available on Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast and as an add-on to Amazon Prime.
