A tire flew off a tractor-trailer traveling on a Long Island highway and hit a car, killing one person Thursday afternoon, officials said.
The truck was going on Route 231 when it lost a tire and flew onto Route 27, hitting a car, according to the Department of Transportation.
One person was killed by the flying tire, Suffolk police said. A yellow tarp covered the crushed sedan as first responders attended to the scene.
The tire was seen about 500 feet away from the crushed car. It’s not clear if the tire hit other vehicles along the way, but there were no reports of any other injuries.
The victim has not been identified.
The Sunrise Highway westbound and the service road are closed near the Robert Moses Causeway as police investigate.
