Veronica Mars is returning for a revival series on Hulu, but it’s going to be a little different than you might remember.
Hulu president Craig Erwich told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that we’ll be seeing a more grown-up Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) than we saw on the original series and even the revival movie that came out in 2015.
“It is very true to the character. It is very true to the world. It’s true to the tone of the show and what made people fall in love with the show,” Erwich said. “But it’s definitely an update. She’s not a little girl anymore. You’ll see her deal with contemporary issues in a contemporary world.”
It’s reasonable that the revival would give a contemporary spin on a show from the early aughts — it would feel way meta if it still felt like these characters existed in a world where a yellow Xterra and UGG boots were still so fetch — but there’s definitely something nerve-wracking about knowing there will be shifts in the character and the world we know and love, especially when “a contemporary spin” in the endless string of TV reboots can sometimes just mean more selfies and slapstick Donald Trump humor.

Erwich reassured reporters that the revival isn’t just an attempt to cash in on the reboot frenzy. “We weren’t necessarily looking to make another version of Veronica Mars,” he said. “What happened was that Rob Thomas came into our office and explained very passionately about why he wanted to do this and how he wanted to do this. We’re not just doing it for the sake of doing it.”
The series will premiere in the summer of 2019 on Hulu. Here’s everything we know about the Veronica Mars revival so far.
