In recent weeks, L Brands has cut its full-year guidance and has announced that it will shutter its luxury department store chain, Henri Bendel, including the website.

Executives from online women’s underwear sellers that MarketWatch spoke with say they are finding success and snapping up share with a different approach: offering women product benefits and marketing messages that have been part of the men’s underwear business for ages. Comfort and performance are at the heart of what these companies are selling, and the message resonates with modern, busy women of all shapes and sizes.

Younger women, they say, are opening the door to this new way of selling women’s underwear.

“When you look at Victoria’s Secret marketing, they continue to do the runway show,” said Catalina Girald, founder of Naja, a socially-conscious lingerie brand aimed at millennials. The Victoria’s Secret Runway Show used to be marketing gold for the brand. Lately, ratings have slipped.

“That’s not what the customer wants to see,” said Girald. “If you go back, underwear was a functional garment. It was meant to hold you up. It wasn’t meant to be a sexual thing.”

Naja is one of a number of women’s underwear brands that have launched in recent years. It shares a few features with other companies that have popped up: they are run by women (L Brands’ CEO is a man, Leslie Wexner), they emphasize inclusion in their sizing and marketing, and they treat women’s underwear as a personal, everyday fashion issue rather than just a tool of seduction.

Girald says “performance-oriented” items made with cotton and synthetic fibers are on-trend as they provide sweat-wicking and structure without the use of underwires.

“We’ve seen a sharp drop in thong sales,” she said, noting that they’re worn to eliminate panty lines, but also because they’re sexy. “We’ve taken them off the site. What most women want today is comfort.”

Trend experts at WGSN back up what Girald and others in the industry are saying. They identify two key movements impacting the lingerie business: comfort and body positivity.

“Comfort has become an integral element of lingerie design,” said Jo Lynch, lingerie editor at WGSN. “Soft bralettes and sports inspired bras continue to grow in popularity and consumers have become more conscious of the restrictive feel of underwires, padding and structured silhouettes.”

And one need only look at the recent Savage X Fenty runway show during New York Fashion Week to see just how far the body-positive movement has come. Launched by pop singer Rihanna, the show featured two pregnant models and was cheered on social media.

“Using a diverse range of body shapes, sizes, ethnicities and ages in brand imagery is highly appreciated by the contemporary young customer, who warms to brands who support and include them,” said Lynch.

Brands like Victoria’s Secret and Calvin Klein have always offered the everyday, all-purpose T-shirt bra even as they used over-the-top sexy imagery in their advertising, according to Heidi Zak, co-founder of ThirdLove. That women’s underwear brand just launched a campaign that features a young mom as well as a middle-aged woman in the imagery.

“You sell bras through sex, which is more of a men’s lens,” she said. Even changing the language associated with the category — shifting from the word “lingerie” to simply “bras and underwear” — changes the tone of the conversation.

“If I say I’m the CEO of a lingerie company, men say ‘Ooohh,’” she said. “If you ask women what they put on this morning, they say ‘underwear,’ not ‘lingerie.’ It’s really about the end use. A tight, white tee – what looks best under that?”

Fashion is cyclical, and none of the experts say that the more structured bras and skimpy underpants that Victoria’s Secret specializes in are going away for good. But women are looking for more than that.

“Most women, we want to have marketing that relates to us, that is using models that we see ourselves in,” said Maria Molland, Thinx’s CEO. “It’s a big change because a lot of men are traditionally running these companies.”

Thinx goes even further, selling underwear designed for menstruating women, a historically taboo topic. The company just introduced Thinx (BTWN), a product for girls between the ages of nine and 16. Thinx (BTWN) contains the same fluid-absorbing technology found in the core Thinx brand, but are sized for young girls.

The average Thinx customer is about 30 years old, according to Molland. Thinx (BTWN) opens them up to a slightly older market that is making a purchase for the young women in their lives.

“It’s definitely not a sexy topic,” said Molland. “We’re trying to normalize it.”

The company also uses models in their advertising, but models can have cellulite and stretch marks, usually not part of the women’s underwear advertising image.

Many of the comment sections on MarketWatch stories about Victoria’s Secret are quickly filled with remarks about the Victoria’s Secret models and how a lot of women don’t fit that mold. The executives MarketWatch spoke with say the marketing and product offerings for women’s underwear is changing for good, which could also lessen this sort of sexist criticism.

“There’s more diversity at the top making decisions and I think that’s only going to be happening more in the future,” said Molland, who says about 30% of Thinx’s staff is men and they are the “biggest brand advocates.”

“It’s a trend that will continue and play a major factor,” she said. “I look at this as a real positive, for marketing to be more realistic, more interesting, to create lots of different products.”
