Young Sheldon Renewed for Seasons 3 and 4

The Big Bang Theory might be drawing to a close, but its spin-off Young Sheldon will get plenty more time to grow.

Amid its second season run, CBS has renewed Young Sheldon for two additional seasons, starting with the 2019-2020 TV season. That means there’s still plenty of “bazinga” action ahead as the show continues to explore the origins of the titular genius’ many eccentricities.

In a statement, CBS Entertainment’s president Kelly Kahl said of the series’ renewal, “Thanks to Chuck Lorre’s and Steve Molaro’s outstanding creative leadership, Young Sheldon has been a powerful performer for the Network with an audience that towers over most of the television landscape.”

Added Thom Sherman, Senior Executive Vice President of Programming, “The Coopers are portrayed by an amazing cast, and we are looking forward to having the gifted writing staff mine even more of Sheldon’s hilarious backstory and the warm family dynamic that has made this comedy a favorite with audiences for the past two seasons.”

Young Sheldon stars Iain Armitage as young nerd Sheldon Cooper (portrayed by Jim Parsons on The Big Bang Theory). Though it centers on the child genius, the series often feels like an Easter eggstravaganza for fans of the elder Sheldon Cooper we’ve come to know and love so well. The show has followed in the footsteps of its parent series in the way of popularity, notching up a whopping 14.5 million weekly viewers.

The Big Bang Theory was canceled after 12 seasons and will conclude with its series finale this spring.

Young Sheldon airs Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c on CBS.
