Law enforcement officers shot a suspect Sunday night in Teller County after he crashed his vehicle during a chase, jumped out of the vehicle and struck officers, injuring two of them, authorities say.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said Lt. Howard Black, spokesman for the Colorado Springs Police Department. The department’s Deadly Force Investigative team is investigating the shooting.

At 8:14 a.m., Teller County sheriff’s deputies and Cripple Creek police officers responded to a 911 call about suspicious activity in the 1200 block of Highway 67 in Teller County.

When the suspect saw the officers converging on him, he sped off. A short pursuit ensued. The suspect crashed his vehicle. As officers surrounded him he began fighting them.

Officers fired at least one bullet at the suspect, striking him. The suspect was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

One Teller County sheriff’s deputy and a Cripple Creek police officer were taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The officers involved have been placed on routine administrative leave, Black said.
