Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham thinks President Trump has picked the right fight when it comes to the Mexican border wall.
“I think Democrats hate Trump so much they want him to lose even though it would be good for the country to work with him on border security, and if he doesn’t break them now, it’s going to be a terrible 2019,” Graham said on Fox News shortly before the midnight government shutdown as the two sides hit pause on their fight over wall funding.
‘So, Mr. President, dig in.’
Graham said the government shutdown was a necessary measure to persuade resistant Democrats to give more than the already pledged $1.6 billion to the wall, which already partly exists along the southern border. Trump, who campaigned on the promise Mexico would pay, has asked for $5 billion or more.
“I stand with the president,” Graham said. “I’m glad he picked this fight. If we do not stand up now to make sure we get more money for the wall, we’ll never get any more next year.”
Trump had lashed out Thursday on Twitter at Graham, a White House ally of late, after the hawkish South Carolina Republican criticized the president’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Syria, a move, among others, that cost him a defense secretary this week.
